Staying Strong In Daily Recovery

For many, the hardest part of recovery is the beginning when you are just becoming sober. However, further down the road you may hit some other snags on a day to day basis. There are a number of ways to better avoid or deal with these snags so that they do not result in a relapse.

Staying Up To Date in Recovery

By keeping up with your recovery and working your steps you will find it is always an easy way to stay on track with your sobriety. In the recovery community you will find people who are fighting for the same thing as you, and hopefully build stronger friendships than ever before.

Keeping In Touch With Your Sponsor

The best thing you can do with your recovery is to stay up to date with your sponsor. When things get hard, or when things are going well, let them know. They are there to both help you and guide you through your steps. If you are further along in your recovery but find you may be slipping, consider putting yourself out there to be someone else’s sponsor or a helping friend. You will be surprised by how much helping others who are struggling can help provide security and confidence.

Staying Busy

No matter what, it is always a good idea to stay busy. It is usually when we become bored that we will find ourselves thinking of curing our boredom with mind-altering substances. If work is not enough for you through the day, you can always pick up another hobby, or if all else fails begin going to more meetings until your boredom is no longer a problem.

Avoid Triggering Situations

As difficult as it may be, the best thing you can do for yourself daily is to avoid triggering situations. If you know that certain people or going certain places may lead to thoughts or impulses for that first drink, pill or whatever your weakness may be, just avoid it at all costs. At least until you know for a fact you are comfortable and confident enough in your sobriety to avoid using.

Don’t Sulk

We all have our dark days where we don’t want to talk to anyone, be around anyone and really just want to stay in the bad mood that we are in. However, as easy as it is to allow ourselves to do so, we must fight it. By letting that negativity overload us we are setting ourselves back a little bit on the progress that we have made. The best thing to do is to find or have at least one person in those times that we can reach out and talk to.
