GeneSight® Testing: A Comprehensive Tool for Guiding Substance Use and Mental Health Treatment

GeneSight testing is an innovative genetic test that helps identify how your body responds to more than 60 commonly prescribed psychiatric medications. By using your genetic profile to guide treatment, it reduces the trial-and-error process, minimizes side effects, and improves the chances of finding the right medication sooner.

What is GeneSight Testing?

Treating mental health concerns is not a one-size fits all process, and medications that work well for one person may not work well for you.

GeneSight testing offers a clear, confident path forward in treatment through a swab of a cheek

  • DNA test that analyzes your body’s unique ability to metabolize medications
  • Results highlight which medications will ease your symptoms without triggering side effects

Is GeneSight testing accurate?

The GeneSight test is FDA-registered and Clinically Validated 50% of people using GeneSight-guided treatment saw improvement in their conditions

People using GeneSight-guided treatment report faster relief and fewer side effects—and that means more focus on recovery

Who Should Consider GeneSight Testing?

If you’re in addiction treatment and also managing your mental health, you’re not alone ⓘ. Nearly half of the people who struggle with substance use also have co-occurring mental health conditions, such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression and mood disorders
  • PTSD
  • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

If you’re being treated for any of these conditions and you feel like your medical treatment medications aren’t helping, or even making these worse, GeneSight testing might be for you.

You should consider GeneSight testing if:

  • You’ve been diagnosed with a mental health condition
  • You’ve tried multiple medications and nothing has worked
  • The medications you’ve tried have given you negative side effects
  • You’re in treatment and want to avoid set-backs to your progress
  • You have a family history of treatment-resistant mental health conditions

What Medications Does GeneSight Test For?

By taking the uncertainty out of finding a med that works, you can be on your way to feeling more like yourself again.

GeneSight testing covers a wide variety of commonly prescribed mental health medications, including:

  • Antidepressants are used to treat anxiety, depression, and PTSD
  • Antipsychotics are used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or severe depression
  • Mood stabilizers are used to treat bipolar or mood swings
  • Anxiolytics are used to treat anxiety, panic disorders, and OCD
  • ADHD medications, including stimulants and non-stimulants
  • Some pain medications

How Long Does GeneSight Testing Take?

The GeneSight test is a quick, easy, and non-invasive cheek swab that takes five minutes or less to complete.

  • After the sample is taken, the test is sent to a certified lab for analysis.
  • In just 2-5 business days, the results of the test are made available to your doctor.
  • Your doctor will look over your results and consult with you on treatment plan options that make the most sense for you.

How Do I Read My Results?

GeneSight test results are easy to read and organize medications into three color-coded categories:

🟢 Green: Use as directed – likely to be an effective treatment option

🟡 Yellow: Use with caution – may require adjustments to dosage or closer supervision

🔴 Red: Use with increased caution and monitoring – usage may not be effective and may cause negative side effects

The graphic is split into three color-coded columns: Green column (Use as Directed): These medications are likely to be an effective treatment option. List of medications: desipramine (Norpramin®) desvenlafaxine (Pristiq®) levomilnacipran (Fetzima®) nortriptyline (Pamelor®) trazodone (Desyrel®) vilazodone (Viibryd®) vortioxetine (Trintellix®) duloxetine (Cymbalta®) mitazapine (Remeron®) Yellow column (Moderate Gene-drug Interaction): These medications may require adjustments to dosage or closer supervision. List of medications: venlafaxine (Effexor®) selegiline (Emsam®) fluoxetine (Prozac®) clomipramine (Anafranil®) fluvoxamine (Luvox®) Red column (Significant Gene-drug Interaction): These medications should be used with increased caution and monitoring, as usage may not be effective and could cause negative side effects. List of medications: bupropion (Wellbutrin®) amitriptyline (Elavil®) paroxetine (Paxil®) escitalopram (Lexapro®) sertraline (Zoloft®) imipramine (Tofranil®) citalopram (Celexa®) doxepin (Sinequan®) Each column emphasizes the recommended level of caution for medication use based on an individual’s genetic profile.

Your GeneSight test results will also provide insights on your metabolism that can help inform your doctor’s medication and dosage recommendations.

For each medication, the test results tell you whether you process it too fast or too slow and how that may affect the dosage you need.

  • Poor metabolizer – medication is broken down very slowly, causing potential side effects at normal dosage
  • Intermediate metabolizer – medication is broken down relatively slowly; normal dosages may be too much
  • Normal (extensive) metabolizer – medication is broken down at a normal pace and typical dosages are sufficient
  • Ultrarapid metabolizer – medication is broken down very fast and normal dosages may not be enough

Is GeneSight Covered By Insurance?

Your GeneSight test results will also provide insights on your metabolism that can help inform your doctor’s medication and dosage recommendations.

For each medication, the test results tell you whether you process it too fast or too slow and how that may affect the dosage you need.

Good news—GeneSight testing is covered by Medicare and Medicaid, so most people under those plans don’t have to pay anything out of pocket.

If your plan is under a private insurance company, there’s a good chance that GeneSight testing will be fully or partially covered.
