Reiki Therapy in Mental Health & Addiction Treatment

Reiki therapy is a gentle, hands-on energy practice that reduces stress, prevents burnout, and supports emotional healing. While it doesn’t replace medical or psychological care, most patients find Reiki helps them feel more balanced and resilient, making it easier to engage with other parts of treatment.

Understanding Reiki Therapy

Most patients come to treatment feeling tense, restless, and unable to focus. In that state, it can be hard to fully engage with therapy or even rest
Reiki works by gently channeling energy through light touch or hands held just above the body, helping you shift from that fight-or-flight state into one of calm and balance.

In mental health and addiction treatment, it’s often used alongside evidence-based therapies to calm the nervous system, ease anxiety, and promote a sense of grounding.

Promotes Deep Relaxation

Reiki sessions help quiet the stress response, lowering muscle tension, slowing breathing, and creating the mental space needed to focus on recovery work.

Supports Emotional Release

Many patients describe feeling lighter or less burdened after Reiki, as it can help surface and release emotions stored in the body — reducing anxiety, irritability, and restlessness.

Improves Readiness for Therapy

By reducing mental and physical agitation, Reiki makes it easier to concentrate, participate in counseling, and absorb coping skills — allowing other treatments to work more effectively.

How Reiki Therapy Works

A Reiki therapy session in treatment typically lasts 30–60 minutes, and the calming effects are often felt right away.

Discuss Your Goals

Before the session, your practitioner will ask about your comfort level, current symptoms, and what you’d like to focus on — such as easing anxiety, improving sleep, or feeling more grounded.

Create a Calming Environment

You either lie down or sit comfortably in a quiet space. Soft lighting and gentle background music help you relax.

Channel Healing Energy

The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above specific areas of your body, holding each position for several minutes to encourage balance and relaxation.

Observe and Adjust

Throughout the session, the practitioner may adjust hand positions or timing based on your breathing, body language, and feedback.

Integrate the Experience

After the session, you’ll have a few minutes to sit quietly, reflect, and share any sensations or emotions you noticed — helping you carry that calm, balanced state into the rest of your treatment day.

Common Conditions Benefited By Reiki Therapy

While Reiki is not meant to replace traditional treatment, it can play an important supportive role. By easing physical tension, quieting an overactive mind, and promoting a sense of inner balance, Reiki can help you feel more receptive to therapy and better equipped to handle the emotional demands of healing.

Substance Use Disorders

Eases anxiety, irritability, and physical discomfort during withdrawal, supporting the emotional resilience needed for early recovery.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Encourages stillness and focus, creating mental space that can help balance restlessness and improve concentration.

Depression

Encourages relaxation and supports emotional release, which can reduce heaviness and improve motivation to engage in other parts of treatment.

Anxiety Disorders

Helps quiet the body’s fight-or-flight response, lowering physical tension and racing thoughts so it’s easier to feel grounded.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Promotes a sense of safety and relaxation, which can help reduce hyperarousal and make trauma-focused therapies more approachable.

Bipolar Disorder

Provides a calming, centering effect that can be helpful in managing stress between mood episodes and maintaining emotional stability.

A Comprehensive, Holistic Treatment Experience

Most traditional treatment centers ignore holistic therapy options, while many holistic providers actively avoid essential, evidence-based clinical treatments. The best results come from bringing both worlds together. Just like the core principle of Reiki, it’s all about balance.

The Haven in West Palm saved my life. The staff is amazing! Great place to go to get the help you need! I loved the classes and the girls get-togethers for nails with Barb! Made some great friends and memories. Laughed a lot and cried a lot. Helped me get sober and put my health journey into over drive. I feel great and my daughters are so proud of me! Very positive experience.

Final Reiki Therapy FAQs

Is there any scientific evidence that Reiki works?

Yes, in multiple studies, people who received Reiki had anxiety scores drop by about half or more compared to those who didn’t get Reiki — a change large enough to be noticeable in daily life. Some hospital programs now integrate Reiki into patient care specifically for its ability to lower stress levels, ease tension, and improve emotional well-being.

What exactly happens during a Reiki session?

The practitioner uses light touch or hovers their hands just above your body to focus on areas of tension or imbalance. Many people describe feeling deeply relaxed, noticing warmth or gentle tingling, or even drifting into a meditative state. There’s no muscle manipulation or pressure, and you remain fully clothed.

Do I have to believe in energy healing for Reiki to work?

No. Reiki doesn’t require belief for you to benefit. Many people simply experience it as a calming, meditative process that lowers stress and helps them feel more centered — even if they’re skeptical of the “energy” explanation.

Is Reiki religious or spiritual?

Reiki is not tied to any religion. While some people experience it as a spiritual or grounding practice, others see it as a relaxation technique that supports mental and physical health. It’s entirely up to you how you interpret it.

Can Reiki help with withdrawal symptoms?

Reiki doesn’t treat withdrawal directly, but it can reduce the anxiety, restlessness, and tension that make detox uncomfortable. For example, someone a week into alcohol withdrawal might use Reiki to feel calmer and more focused after medical treatments address the initial physical symptoms.

Will I have to be touched during Reiki?

Not if you don’t want to be. Reiki can be done without any physical contact. If you have touch boundaries — for example, due to trauma history — you can let your practitioner know, and the session will be adapted for your comfort. The practitioner will position their hands above your body instead.

How quickly will I feel results?

Many people feel calmer, lighter, or more relaxed immediately after a session. Others notice more cumulative benefits over several sessions, such as better sleep, less irritability, or a greater sense of emotional balance.

Can Reiki make me feel worse?

Reiki is generally calming, but occasionally people experience a temporary release of emotions — like sudden sadness or tears — as tension is released. This isn’t harmful and often leaves people feeling lighter afterward.

Is Reiki used instead of therapy or medication?

No! At The Haven Detox, Reiki is a complementary therapy. It’s meant to work alongside counseling, medical care, and other treatments to improve overall wellbeing and treatment engagement.

How is Reiki different in a treatment center versus a spa?

In treatment, Reiki is part of an integrated care plan. Your practitioner understands the mental health or addiction challenges you’re facing and tailors the session to support your overall healing goals — not just general relaxation.

What happens if I don’t like Reiki — can I skip it?

Yes. Participation is always voluntary. If you try it and decide it’s not for you, your treatment plan can be adjusted to focus on other therapies you prefer.

Is Reiki safe to do if I’m also doing trauma processing therapy like EMDR?

Yes. Reiki can actually help by reducing the stress and tension that can arise during trauma work, making it easier to stay grounded between EMDR sessions.

Do I need multiple sessions for it to have a noticeable effect?

Some people notice benefits after the first session, but most find that regular sessions — even once a week during treatment — help maintain a calmer, more balanced state.

What’s the difference between Reiki and massage therapy?

Massage works on muscles and soft tissue through physical manipulation. Reiki works on the body’s energy flow using light or no touch. Massage is more physical; Reiki is more about calming the nervous system and creating a sense of emotional balance.

{{insurance-name}} Insurance Covers Treatment Here (Up to 100%)

Checking your insurance is private and without commitment.

There’s no catch. Checking your insurance is simply a way to see what your plan covers — it doesn’t lock you into treatment, notify anyone, or cost you anything. You get answers upfront to decide what makes sense for you.

Protecting your privacy matters! No information or notifications are ever sent to your employer or family — whether you check your insurance online or call. Everything is handled through secure, encrypted systems that meet strict medical privacy laws. You stay in control of your information!

Luckily, most insurance policies cover treatment here. Depending on the healthcare you’ve already had this year, costs could even be zero. Instead of worrying, let’s just find out what your plan covers.

Most likely. We work with major providers like Cigna, Aetna, and United Healthcare, public insurances like Tricare and tribal plans, and even smaller plans like Surest Bind and Harvard Pilgrim. The quickest way to know for sure is to check online or call. It’s a quick, private way to understand what is covered upfront.

Verifying your insurance isn’t a commitment to start treatment — it’s simply a way to see what your options are. Knowing your coverage ahead of time helps you make more informed, confident decisions. It also helps flag a spot, so you’re able to get right in if you ever do decide you’re ready.

You need your policy number to check your specific policy online. If you want general information, just call.  You likely have questions beyond insurance anyway. Reaching out now helps you figure out the right fit if or when you’re ready. You don’t have to put off the call until you’re in crisis. Calling is not scary, I promise!
