Peer Recovery Coaching for Mental Health & Addiction Treatment

Recovery feels easier when someone truly gets what you’re going through. At The Haven Detox, you’ll be matched with a certified peer coach, someone who’s faced mental health or substance use challenges and found their way through. They’re there to support you, check in regularly, and help you stay on track, because they’ve lived it too.

Understanding Peer Recovery Coaching

Getting help is one thing. Feeling understood is another. Peer coaching gives you both. You’ll work with someone who’s been through recovery and knows what it’s like to feel overwhelmed, uncertain, or stuck.

Your coach isn’t a doctor or a therapist. They’re someone in long-term recovery who can talk with you honestly and help you stay on track.

According to SAMHSA, peer support can help people stay in treatment, lower the risk of relapse, and build stronger long-term recovery. In fact, studies have shown that peer support services can increase treatment engagement by up to 67%.

Who Peer Coaching Helps

People Just Starting Recovery Who Feel Overwhelmed or Disconnected

Starting treatment can feel like stepping into the unknown. Peer coaches help ease those first days by offering emotional support, sharing their own experiences, and checking in when things get hard—especially when the motivation isn’t there yet.

Anyone Looking to Connect with Recovery Communities

If you're curious about groups like AA, NA, SMART Recovery, or Recovery Dharma—but unsure where to start—your coach can walk you through it. They can share what to expect, help you find meetings near you, and help you figure out what feels like the right fit.

People Preparing to Leave Treatment Who Don’t Feel Ready

Discharge can feel scary. Your coach helps build a real-world aftercare plan: therapy appointments, housing leads, support groups, medication management, or even transportation. They help turn “What now?” into a clear next step. This also includes connecting you with our lifetime alumni program, so you have a built-in community once treatment ends.

Those Managing both Mental Health and Substance Use

Dual diagnosis can add another layer of complexity. Peer coaches provide steady support when you’re juggling therapy, medication, and recovery work. They’ve felt that kind of pressure—and they know how to help you stay grounded when everything feels like too much.

Most Common Conditions We Support With Peer Recovery Coaching

Peer coaches at The Haven Detox support people recovering from both substance use and mental health conditions. Whether you’re in early treatment or preparing for life after discharge, a peer coach can offer real-world guidance and steady encouragement—because they’ve lived it themselves.

Alcohol Use Disorder

If anxiety makes it hard to attend groups, ask for help, or trust the process, your coach gets it. They can walk you through what to expect at a meeting, role-play conversations, or help you practice simple coping tools when panic or avoidance creeps in.

Opioid Use Disorder

For people in recovery from opioids, staying engaged after detox is critical. A coach can support you through cravings, boredom, and fatigue. If you're using MAT (like Suboxone or methadone), they can help normalize the process and encourage you to stick with your treatment even when it gets uncomfortable or slow.

Depression

On days when just getting out of bed feels like a win, peer coaches offer gentle, consistent support. They won’t push—they’ll meet you where you are. A coach might help you get to group, take a walk, or simply talk through what’s on your mind without pressure or judgment.

Anxiety Disorders

Reduces muscle tightness, headaches, and restlessness often tied to chronic stress, creating a calmer, more grounded state.

Stimulant Use (Cocaine, Meth, etc.)

Coaches help you deal with the high/low cycles that come with stimulant recovery—racing thoughts, emotional crashes, or feeling wired one day and exhausted the next. If you’re feeling disconnected or edgy, your coach can help you ground yourself with simple tools like sleep routines, structure, and community support.

Prescription Drug Misuse

Whether you’ve been misusing painkillers, benzos, or ADHD meds, your coach helps you rebuild day-to-day structure. That might mean talking through how to manage tapering off a medication, how to handle a tough doctor’s visit, or how to shift back into daily life without coping.

PTSD & Trauma-Related Disorders

Doing trauma work in therapy can bring up a lot. Peer coaches provide grounding and consistency between sessions—so if you feel overwhelmed, triggered, or like quitting therapy, there’s someone to talk to who understands and can help you stay connected to your healing.

Bipolar & Mood Disorders

Peer coaches help you stay steady—especially during energy swings, racing thoughts, or stretches of low motivation. If you’re working on routines, sleep, or sticking to meds, your coach checks in, offers support, and helps you problem-solve when plans fall apart.

A Supportive Setting for Peer Coaching

Peer coaching works best in a space that feels calm, welcoming, and judgment-free. At The Haven Detox, private rooms, cozy group spaces, and relaxed common areas are designed to help you open up, feel supported, and stay connected.

My stay at the Haven was great. I found that most of the staff were helpful and polite. It helped knowing that most of them are recovering addicts as well. Katie with the alumni has been wonderful. She has shown a lot of concern for my well being and how things have gone for me since I left. It really touched me.

If you’re struggling and wondering which place is the right place for you! Most of the staff there are recovering addicts themselves, so you will never ever have to worry about being judged or not properly understood. Haven isn’t worried the things you’ve done in your past, only about how they can help you get and stay clean and sober and help you shape your future!

Frequently Asked Questions About Peer Recovery Coaching

Is peer coaching the same as therapy?

No. Peer coaches don’t provide therapy or medical care. They offer support based on their own recovery experience. It’s a different kind of help—more like having someone who gets it walk alongside you.

Can peer coaches help with both addiction and mental health?

Yes. Coaches are trained to support people recovering from substance use, mental health conditions, or both at the same time.

How long do I work with my peer coach?

You’ll be matched with a coach during treatment. In some cases, your coach may continue checking in after you leave, depending on your plan.

Is what I share with my peer coach private?

Yes. Peer coaches follow strict privacy rules and work under clinical supervision. What you share stays between you and your care team.

Will my insurance cover peer coaching?

Most insurance plans cover peer coaching when it’s part of your overall treatment. You can check your benefits with a quick, confidential insurance verification.

Will I still get support after treatment ends?

Yes. All former patients are invited to join our alumni program, where support continues long after you leave. Alumni have access to recovery check-ins, community events, and a growing network of people who truly understand what staying well looks like. Once you’ve been part of The Haven, you’re never doing this alone.

{{insurance-name}} Insurance Covers Treatment Here (Up to 100%)

Checking your insurance is private and without commitment.

There’s no catch. Checking your insurance is simply a way to see what your plan covers — it doesn’t lock you into treatment, notify anyone, or cost you anything. You get answers upfront to decide what makes sense for you.

Protecting your privacy matters! No information or notifications are ever sent to your employer or family — whether you check your insurance online or call. Everything is handled through secure, encrypted systems that meet strict medical privacy laws. You stay in control of your information!

Luckily, most insurance policies cover treatment here. Depending on the healthcare you’ve already had this year, costs could even be zero. Instead of worrying, let’s just find out what your plan covers.

Most likely. We work with major providers like Cigna, Aetna, and United Healthcare, public insurances like Tricare and tribal plans, and even smaller plans like Surest Bind and Harvard Pilgrim. The quickest way to know for sure is to check online or call. It’s a quick, private way to understand what is covered upfront.

Verifying your insurance isn’t a commitment to start treatment — it’s simply a way to see what your options are. Knowing your coverage ahead of time helps you make more informed, confident decisions. It also helps flag a spot, so you’re able to get right in if you ever do decide you’re ready.

You need your policy number to check your specific policy online. If you want general information, just call.  You likely have questions beyond insurance anyway. Reaching out now helps you figure out the right fit if or when you’re ready. You don’t have to put off the call until you’re in crisis. Calling is not scary, I promise!
